Fifteenth Annual University of California Undergraduate Conference on Slavic and East/Central European Studies

Sat, 04/21/2012 (All day)
University of California, Los Angeles, campus

One of the great benefits of knowing a foreign language is being able to use source materials in that language. This conference gives students the opportunity to integrate their language skills with research on some aspect of Slavic or East/Central European studies and to present their work in a collegially critical and at the same time friendly and supportive environment.  Presenting a conference paper is an ideal way to strengthen graduate school applications or add an academic component to your résumé. In addition, those interested have the opportunity to submit their papers for peer-reviewed publication in the on-line UCLA Journal of Slavic and East/Central European Studies (http://www.international.ucla.edu/languages/slavicjournal).

Papers must incorporate some materials in a Slavic or other East/Central European language. Your level of proficiency will determine the extent to which foreign language materials should be used.  For example, beginning students might incorporate titles of books or articles or place names in the original Slavic language; intermediate students might read some passages in the original from relevant sources; advanced students might base their paper on sources in the given language.  Individual presentations should be 10-15 minutes in length; joint presentations should be 15-20 minutes in length.

Proposals are due March 9, 2012

Russian Film Series: Страна глухих/Land of the Deaf

Tue, 03/27/2012 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm
254 Van Hise Hall, 1220 Linden Drive

By the amazing director of such films as "Hipsters", "Love", and "My Step-Brother Frankenstein", Valeriy Todorovsky, and based on a story by another outstanding figure in Russian cinematography, Renata Litvinova, at the center of "Land of the Deaf" is the friendship of two young women who find themselves in the middle of a showdown between two mafia clans, one whose members are dead and the other hearing. "Deaf people are a sort of layer," says screenwriter Yury Korotkov, "that exists in its own particular world, completely different from the world of the hearing... At some point deafness in the film becomes an artistic image that reflects the lives of people in the modern world."

"Land of the Deaf" will be shown in Russian with English subtitles. Introductory remarks are by Snezhana. For more information please contact zheltoukhova@wisc.edu

Film Screening: Pit No.8/Шахта № 8

Marquee Theater at Union South

Director: Marianna Kaat (95 min., color, Blu-Ray, Estonia/Ukraine, In Russian with English subtitles)

In the heart of Ukraine's once-thriving coal-mining region in the town of Snizhne lives 15-year old Yura, head of his family of three that includes his two younger sisters. The town's coal mines have officially been abandoned as "poor pits", but Yura and many other children, retirees, and unemployed members of the community continue to dig for coal illegally in shafts under their homes, their gardens, abandoned buildings and parks. Yura dreams of raising money to get training to become a chef in his own cafe; but the economic realities of the recent global economic fownturn continually press in upon him and his family. An intimate profile lacking a traditional narrative plot, the film presents an in-depth account of one family's struggle to survive in a world increasingly lacking economic opportunity. A Minute for Reflection: Soviet Television Game Shows, 1960s-1980s

Thu, 03/01/2012 - 4:00pm - 5:00pm
206, Ingraham Hall

A lecture by Christine Evans, Assistant Professor of History from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Sponsored by the Center for Russia, East Europe and Central Asia.

Abstract: Soviet television game shows occupy a prominent spot among the many "common places" of post-Soviet memory, reflecting their great popularity among viewers during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. This paper will argue that Soviet Central Television's game shows were not just the most popular, but also among the most important and interesting programs on Central Television. They offer us a particularly concentrated and revealing view of the social and political conflicts and processes of the late Soviet Union, and thus a better understanding of both the origins of the Societ collapse in 1991 and the significant continuities between the late Societ and current Russian systems. For more information >

Russian Film Series: Девятая рота/Ninth Company

Wed, 02/29/2012 - 5:30pm - 7:40pm
254 Van Hise Hall, 1220 Linden Drive

Ninth Company received awards from the most important Russian film festivals, was a selection in the 2005 U.S. Academy Awards for best foreign film, and was the highest grossing film in Russia in 2005. The film is based on real events that occurred in 1988 during the end of the war and the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, when marines of the ninth company, forgotten by their homeland, but still loyal, heroically, but futilely, defended a strategic hill.

Ninth Company will be shown in Russian with English subtitles. Introductory remarks are by Snezhana Zheltoukhova. For more information please contact info@russianflagship.wisc.edu

Baba Yaga

Fri, 02/17/2012 (All day) - Sun, 02/19/2012 (All day)
Overture Center for the Arts, 201 State Street, Madison

The masterful take on the Russian Fairy Tale returns to Madison. Baba Yaga, a dark and fanciful dance-drama featuring costumes by NYC’s David Quinn, masks, puppets, and sets of artist Heidi Cooper, along with inspired choreography from Artistic Directors Lisa Thurrell and Robert E. Cleary, Kanopy's Kerry Parker, and guests Elise Snyder and Kiro Kopulos. In traditional Russian tales, Baba Yaga is portrayed as a hag who lives in a hut atop a pair of dancing chicken legs; the fence outside is made with bones with skulls. Young Vasilissa is sent by her nasty stepsisters on an errand to Baba Yaga and is captured for the witch’s evening meal. To win her freedom, Vasilissa must perform three impossible tasks. Her magic doll given to her by her mother awakens to help her on her journey.“…Both Thurrell and co-director Robert Cleary have a Midas touch...” –S. Kepecs, Daily Page

On Saturday, February 18, Jennifer Tishler, CREECA's associate director, will speak on Baba Yaga in Russian folktales before the 7 p.m. performance. Jennifer's introduction will run from 6:30-7:00 in Promenade Hall.

Land Use Change and Biodiversity after the Collapse of the Soviet Union

Thu, 02/09/2012 - 4:00pm
206 Ingraham Hall

A lecture by Volker Radeloff, UW-Madison. Associate Professor of Forest and Wildlife Ecology.  Sponsored by the Center for Russia, East Europe and Central Asia.

Abstract: Twenty years ago, the Soviet Union collapsed causing a massive socioeconomic shock and rapid institutional changes.Land use responded at a grand scale: about a third of all farmland in Eastern Europe and Russia was abandoned.Satellite data shows that forests are regrowing on many former farmfields in the northern forest belt, and these regions are rewilding. However, in the southern grassland the socioeconomic collapse led to decreasing grazing pressure, increasing grassy fuels, and rapid increases in wildfires that are destroying native Artemisia shrublands. The land use changes in turn are affecting wildlife populations: brown bears in the North are increasing due to better habitat and less human disturbance, but saiga populations in the South have plummeted due to poaching and shrubland loss. The fate of the former Soviet Union thus highlights the cascading effects of socioeconomic disturbances on land use, disturbance processes, and biodiversity, and the challenges involved in predicting the future given “black swan” events. For more information >

Russian Film Series: Брат 2/ Brother 2

Tue, 02/07/2012 - 6:00pm
254 Van Hise Hall, 1220 Linden Drive

Brother 2 (2000) is the continuation of the Russian cult film Brother by director Aleksey Balabanov.  This time Danila goes to America with his brother to sort things out with the Chicago mafia, which is threatening his brother’s friend.  Danila contrasts his own philosophy with the Western way of life in attempting to find the answer to the simple question  “where is power, brother?”  Music by such groups as Би-2, Zemfira, and Chicherina make up the magnificent soundtrack, perhaps the greatest strength of the film.

Brother 2 will be shown in Russian with English subtitles.  Snezhana Zheltoukhova will provide introductory remarks in Russian.  For more information on the screening, contact Snezhana.

Russian Film Series: Царь/Tsar (2009)

Room 254 Van Hise Hall

Tsar (2009)

image from film "Tsar"

It’s dark times for Russian in 1565 under the rule of Ivan  the Terrible.  Rus’ is torn apart by starvation and the Livonian war.  Amidst it all the leader senses betrayal and treason.   His loyal servants, “oprichniki,” flooded the country with blood, seeing in every person an enemy of the state.  The only law for them was the tsar.  The only person to go against the tsar’s will and the misdeeds of the oprichniki was the head of the church, Phillip, the tsar’s faithful friend since childhood, who, in raising his voice, sacrificed himself.  This tale of opposition speaks to what Rus’ was capable of, both in the rise and fall of the human spirit.

Konevets Quartet/

Tue, 10/18/2011 - 7:00pm
St. Igantius Church, 2124 Shafer Dr., Fitchburg (interesection of Verona and Raymond Roads)

picture of Konovets Quartet

Free-will donations will be collected (part of the Quartet’s revenue goes towards the restoration of the Konovets Monastery, which suffered catastrophic damage during the Soviet era)

About the Konevets Quartet. The Konevets Quartet was founded in 1992 by four young musicians from the St. Petersburg Conservatory who sang in the choir of the Konevets Monastery of the Holy Nativity on the Island of Konevets on Lake Ladoga. Their first audiences were the people working on the restoration of the monastery, and the pilgrims and tourists who visited the island. All the members of the ensemble studied at the St Petersburg Glinka Choir College. Trained in the tradition of Russian song, the Konevets Quartet is not just a group of individual soloists, but is in essence a chamber choir dedicated to creating a perfect harmonious ensemble sound.

At the heart of their repertoire is Russian church music, from ancient material written for the monasteries to works by 20th century composers. The earliest church music is sung in unison or in arrangements for two or three voices, and in contemporary four-voice arrangements, many of them written by members of the Konevets Quartet. Apart from church music, their concert programs often include a variety of Russian folk songs and military songs and marches from the days of the Imperial army — songs which were all but lost during Soviet times. The repertoire also draws on settings of Russian poems arranged for male voice choirs by Russian classical composers.

As musical ambassadors of the Konevets Monastery, part of the Quartet’s revenue goes towards the restoration of the Monastery, which suffered catastrophic damage during the Soviet era. With this goal, the Quartet has participated in leading international festivals in Russia, Great Britain, the US, France, Italy, Ireland and Scandinavia. Konevets Quartet always offers a fascinating program, and the chance to learn more about the rich tradition of Russian choral music and the music of the male chamber choir.

Russian Film Series: Брат / Brother

Wed, 09/28/2011 - 4:30pm
254 Van Hise Hall

Brother is a 1997 Russian cult favorite directed by Alexei Balabanov. The relationship between Danila (played by Sergei Bodrov Jr.) and his brother is the central concern of the film, which moves beyond the context of Russia in the 1990s in exploration of the idea of “brotherhood.” The magnificent soundtrack (featuring Nautilus Pompilius, Zemfira, Chicherina) is an integral part of the message the director seeks to convey in this masterpiece of post-Soviet cinematography.
